How to Become an Electrician in Illinois

Requirements for Becoming an Electrician in Illinois

Illinois Electrical License – Illinois does not have any statewide electrical licensing, but most cities or counties do. To be licensed or registered to work as an electrician in the state you have to contact the city or the county in which you hope to work in order to determine the requirements. For instance, in Chicago, contact the city’s Department of Buildings to learn how to become licensed as a supervising electrician, or apply to Cook County for registration as an electrical contractor.

Regardless of which city or county you hope to work, the first step to becoming an electrician in Illinois is to complete an educational or apprenticeship program. You will need to complete coursework in electrical technology, develop a knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and get hands-on job experience under a licensed electrician to meet any of the state’s individual municipality requirements.

You may choose to begin with a vocational or community college, or a trade school, which will provide the necessary coursework. Some of these electrician programs will help you connect with a licensed electrician to begin an apprenticeship, or you may be responsible for finding that position on your own. The state also has several union and non-union apprenticeship programs, which include all the class time and on-the-job hours you will need to learn how to become an electrician.

Once you have completed one of these programs, you can begin applying for licensing where you want to work. In Chicago, you must be at least 21 years of age, have two years of work experience with an electrician and pass an exam. By meeting these requirements you can become a licensed supervising electrician in the city and be hired by an electrical contractor. If you want to become a contractor to start your own business and hire other electricians you can apply to become an independent electrical contractor in Cook County. The county requirements include being licensed as a supervising electrician and holding liability insurance.

Electrician Apprenticeship Programs in Illinois

An apprenticeship program is a good way to become an electrician in the state, because it will give you all the experience you need to meet requirements for licensing in most cities and counties. There are several Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committees (JATCs) throughout the state that are associated with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) as well as some non-union programs offered through the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). In 2018, according to the BLS, there were 25,240 electricians employed in Illinois.
