Requirements for Becoming an Electrician in Oklahoma

The licensing for electricians in Oklahoma is the responsibility of the Construction Industries Board. The Board registers electrical apprentices and licenses journeymen and electrical contractors. There is no master electrician license in the state. The first step to getting licensed is to become an apprentice and meet the 8,000 hours of work experience requirement. That requirement can be met entirely by work experience as an apprentice, or 2,000 of those hours can be substituted for classroom hours. Half of the 8,000 hours must be in a commercial setting.

To meet the requirements to qualify for the journeyman exam and licensing, you can choose to complete an apprenticeship program. Alternatively, you can earn a degree in electrical technology and get the remaining required hours through an apprenticeship and on-the-job training. After working as a licensed journeyman electrician for at least two years you qualify to take the exam to become an independent electrical contractor. Contractors can start businesses and hire other contractors or journeymen.

Electrician Apprenticeship Programs in Oklahoma

One option for meeting all the requirements to get licensed as a journeyman electrician is to enroll in and complete a union or a non-union apprenticeship. These programs are designed to provide you with all the training and hours you need to qualify for licensing upon completion. There are two Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committees, or JATCs, in Oklahoma, which operate through local chapters of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Tulsa Electrical JATC and the Western Oklahoma Electrical JATC.

For a non-union option, you can choose between two programs: Independent Electrical Contractors Oklahoma City and Associated Builders and Contractors Oklahoma Chapter. Requirements for most of the apprenticeship programs are being 18 years old, having a high school diploma or GED, having passed an algebra course and having a driver’s license. Regardless of the program you choose, all apprentices must register with the state Construction Industries Board.

Oklahoma Schools for Electricians

Up to 2,000 hours of the work experience requirement can be substituted for classroom learning at a vocational or community college. The class hours must be related to electrical systems and technology. Here are some examples of electrician schools and relevant programs in Oklahoma:

  • Metro Technology Centers. Located in Oklahoma City, Metro Tech offers day and evening programs in electrician assisting, either for residential only or both residential and commercial. The latter costs $3,225 and includes 1,290 hours, while the former costs $1,950 and includes 780 classroom hours. High school students may enroll in the residential assistant program.
  • OSU Institute of Technology. In Okmulgee, students can choose the associate degree program in electrical/electronics technology, which takes two years to complete. The program includes help with placement in an internship so that students can begin getting work experience hours and earning an income while taking classes.
  • Northeast Tech. Located in Pryor and Afton, Northeast Tech offers an electrical technology program that prepares students to work as apprentices. This is a full-time program that confers two-year associate degrees.
